Mr. Ward intends, if circumstances permit, to devota some time to botany and geology. Ow ing to the nature of the expedition it will be possible to carry only a limited quantity of baggage, which will be transported across country on mules. A considerable amount of "roughing" will have to be borne, but in view of their previous experience there is no doubt the Ward and his companion will be able to carry the affair through with completa unc. cess, and their labours should add considerably to the store of knowledge at the disposal of the Zoological Society,
THE YUNNAN RAILWAY,
The following is given io. The Times from a Paris correspondent:-
|
The cops raction of the railway in Yuznao, the prolongation of the Tong King, railway from Haiphong to Lao-Kai is almost completed | as far as Yoonan, and only three metal bridges remain unfinished, each 184 ft, in length. The railway in in fact now open for traffic for a dis tance of 186 miles from Lao-Kai, leaving go miles still to be finished to teach Yunnan. it is hoped that the entire undertaking will be ready for use early in igro.
An earthquake, which occurred on May 11, near the outskirts of Puo-Hi, the prosent rail- bead, caused serious damage to a bridge in masonry and also to three tunnels, resulting in an unforeseen delay of several weeks. The construction of this railway has been extrême. ly difficult, and at one time the success of the undertaking appeared to be doubtful.
The course of the line was surveyed in 1900 and 1001, it traversed the Nam-ti valley, passing near Meng-itz, 183ching Amichu at the [139th mile and Y-Lang-Hies at the 251st mile with the terminal station at Yannao, giving a total length of 292 miles. The scheme was adopted in 1901 and was extimated to entail an outlay of £3,800,000. The transpart of the requisite materials gave rise in the first instance to serious trouble.

*The construction of the railway was definitely approved early in 1934, when the works were put in hand. At the date the railway from Haiphong to. Lao-Kai was still unfinished, and was not expected to be ready until 1906. This involved a great increase in cost, as the materi al had to be transported by wagons, barges, and mules. Auother difficulty was caused by the scarcity of labour in the country traversed, for, contrary to expectations, it was found to be very sparsely inhabited, and workmen had to be brought from places as far distant as Canton and Tientsin. During the month of October 1955, and throughout the year 1907, when the work was expedited to the utmost, there were not less than 60,000 people employed, 40,000 of whom, were, actually engaged on the con- struction. The capital originally estimated to be required was found to be wholly inade quate, and the cast has reached £6,600,000 In consequence of an arrangement made with the French Gavèrnment and the colony of Indo-China, the requisite fonds have been raised, aud io spite of serious financial embar- rassments, no delay been caused to the work.
The line is of metre gauge throughout ↑ the maximum gradients between Chen-Kiang and Yunnan are 2.5 per cent, and between Ami- cho and Chen-Kiang they amount to 5 per cent.
