"AnticipatăD COMPENSATION BY WAR OFFICE.
A The War Office seems, according to Japan ese papers, to be prepared to grant compensa tion for the damages suffered by the people in the vicinity of the scene of the recent explosion. A high adjutant officer in the War Office is said to have staled that po report on the cause of the explosion or deinits of the damage had yot been received. The Osäka Army Division has the onus of Camidering the course to be taken for paying compensation to the people suffering as a result, of the explosion, but the question is hardly likely to be settled before the conclusion of investigations. If the disaster I found to be due to a sudden change in the weather, as la now supposed, the War Office will not accept the responsibility of paying compensation, the disaster arising from via thafor, as in the case of the explosions at Itabashi and Iwabama. But in sympathy with the unfortunate people who have sustained loss, the War Office may grant a suitable sum as compensation even if the disaster proves to ba due to natural action:

Yet another important new building is being erected in Shanghai, says the N, L. D. Nea The Standard Oil Company of New York is, building a fiae new hong, at the corner of Cad- too and Szeckuen Roads, and judging by the plans, this structure will be a striking addition to Shanghai's architecture. Whether it will be of artificial stone or granite, has not yet bedoing Leader that he had made the gift to per- decided, but the foundations, which are of reinforced concrete, will be suitable for either. They are monolithic, and the weight of the building will be accurately distributed over the whole area by a system of reinforced concrete beams which are a portion of a reinforced "rafi." By this means it is confidently expect ed that subridence will be prevented, or, at any rate, reduced 'very' appreciably. It will take about two months to complete the foundations, and then the building of the superstructura will be begun. The balling will have a frontage to both roads, the total

Milk contains bacteria of many kinds and in warying numbers. They cause the souring of milkaswell as the ripening of cream and chasse, and produce many other changes in the ap pearance Lod favour. The number present in

Disaria germs, notably those of typhold, diphtheria, scarlet fever Aud tuberculosis, may also be carried in milk, so that the purity of the milk supply is of vital importance to pvery family and commualty,
