FULLER PROTECTION OF PACIFIC URGED.

San Francisco, August 24, A party of 26-Congressmen who have arrived here-en out to Hawaii, paid a visit to the Naval station at Mare Island yesterday. The party was unanimous in the opinion that it was necessary to increase the U., Navy as the pation's commerce on the Pacific developed.

The party was entertained to dinner at the St. Francis Hole by the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. In the course of the function, the members of the party made assurances that they would exert themselves to obtain the passage of a Pacific Navigation Subsidy Bill during the next session of Con Kress,

In the course of speech in reply Dr. Taylor," Mayor of San Francisco, remarked that com- mercial competition on the Pacific ought not to be carried on by the influence or force of arms, but by intellectual power and enterprise.
