PEARLS,
It is said that the Chinese were the first to find out that the pear in, the oyster is dúo to the Itvitation produced by the introduction of particle of foreign matter. This is coated with nacreous matter, and forms the pearl. Advant age, was taken of this to make what may por haps be called artificial pearls. The shells are gently opened and bits of mad, lead, &c., in- serted. They are then placed in a stream of water, and fed with manure. This making of pearls in carried on to a considerable extent in Ohiss and japas. One advantage is that by varying the shape of the jatroduced piece of lead, &c, the shape of the peall can be varied. Artificial pearls, however, are not so fine as the natural ones..
The natural pearl is also produced by an irritant foreigg body, but it has been shown that this is very frequently, if not normally, the egg of a parasitic worm. The coating of this with a pacreous deposit seems to be a measure of self-protection on the part of the oyster. If -the oyster happens to be eaten by a gull the pearl will be dissolved in the acid digestive julces of the bird, and the parasite will pass through its second staga in its new host,
