NAGOYA KENCHO STORMED.

·

A SCENE OF EXCITEMENT..

The Nagoya Kencbo was a scene of some excitement on the 15th ultimo when a mob of over 150 people from Milke-Shinden, a small village in the prefecture, proceeded to the office of the prefectural government and, threatening the officials, demanded to see the governor. It is stated that the Keacho authorities had a schema under way to lay out a drainage' system at Moto-Shinden, a village above that where the protestants resided, and they alleged that this scheme would damage their water rights. Accordingly they proceeded in a body to the Kéacha to insist on its withdrawal. Upon the advice of the police only four of them were ad. mitted av a deputation to lodge their complalat with the authorities, the others being.com- mended to return home. The outcome is not yet reported.dupon Chronicle.

DEATH FOR A KISS.

INSULT TO YOUNG LADY COSTS TERRIBLE PRICK.

OFFICER MURDERED. ON FIELD OF HONOUR,

Never, perhaps, was duel fought, under more murderous conditions than that which has just ended in the death of a young Gergian officer, The dead man had tried to kiss a comrade's fiances. This insult has been wiped out in his

bland, while his widow, who is shortly to be- come a mother, and a child of two, mourn his losi, The scene of the affair was the woods that surround the romantic castle ruin of Ra. genstein, to the north Blankenburg, in the Hair. Opposed toode neother were Lieutenant Granier, of the rat tufanby Regiment, statiou ed at Thoin, who was the challenger, and Lieut. tenant Zwiizers, of the 165th Tufantry Regi. meal, which is garrisoned at Blankenburg. The conditious were the severest imaginable, Damely, alternative pistol shots, with thirty seconds' aim, at tee prices, till one of the two, should be unable to continue the combat. Pro: parations of a 'most elaborate nature had been made for the meeting. A couple of sections of soldiers sunpanded the ground to keep the curious at a distance. Two-docters were in attendance, and a locomotive, with an ambul abce van attached, was kept waiting at Blan 'kenburg Station with steam up, ready to take either of the combatants who might be wound- ed to hospital at Halberstadt:

DUEL OPENED

Lieutenant Granier, as the injured parly and challenger, apened the duel. He had half

a minute in which to shoot'down' a man stand.

On the way, under the influence of the liquor which he bad swallowed, he so far forget the obliga- tions incumbent on an officer, a gentleman, and an escort as to attempt to kiss his com- panion. She vigorously and successfully, re- pelled his approaches. He then became cons- cious of the gravity of his fault, and apologised to the lady, "who agreed to forgive it. They-Miss T. Kersten, Rev. and Mrs, G. D. Thom arranged on her parents' doorstep that nothing was to be said to anyone about the incident, and there the matter was left. At Whitsuntide, however, seventeen weeks later, Lieutenant Granier came to Blankenburg on leave, and bis fiances, for some reason or other, thought it best to tell what happened. The result, says the Telegraph, was a challonge and the duel describ. ed above. Previously the matter had come before one of those curious bodies known as Courts of Honour, and, iba' conditions of the escounter were sanctioned by this tribunal , Lieutenant Zwilzers was asked by, the court if the young woman had done anything to lead up to his indiscretion, it being added that she denied having given him the least en couragement.. To this he replied: If the lady say that, then it is so. The above ac count appears to be based chiefly upon Lieut- enzot Zwitsers' farewell letter to his wife, writ ton on the eve of the deel.
