The chief reason why Japan is mable successfully to compete with the MANUFACTURERS foreign article is that the cost of pure milk is so high, which naturally makes the price of condensed milk-higher that that of "the foreign" production. The high price of milk is of course due to the undeveloped condition of cattle breeding in this country. The average price of milk in Japan is 23 sen, per ako, and, as it requires 6 go of milk and jo mamme of sugar to make one kib of condensed milk the cost of CHAM- the materials per kin amounts to 141 sen.
