OHILD EATEN BY AN ALLIGATOR,

A report from the Lieutenant-Governor of Masbate, Philippina Islands, 'to the Executive Secretary, gives details of the horrible fate of a six year old girl who was eaten alive by anh alligator in the barrio of 'San Isidos, munici pality of Aroroy, on June 9th.

The child was playing along the banks of a stream near a group of shacks called Natin: banan, about zeon, when the alligator crawled out of the water and had the child in ita. jaws before the alarm could be given by other chil dren playing near: The father, the tapiente of the barrio, and several of the residents, rushed to the place where the incident occurred, but the alligator had disappeared. Some time Jater the hair, a part of the skull, and parts of the child's body were found in 'a mangrove swamp. This is the first report of such a care in Mas bata, although several incidents have occurred of the eating of human beings by alligators in Negros and Samar

The peculiar Origin of '.

"YOURS SINCERELY."

Have you ever reflected, when you faish op your letter "Yours sincerely, John Smith, why you do so, or whence came the origin of this apistolary method of subscribing to your state of soul in regard to any particular correspondent? In casas, bawaver," where the ver dict was so overwhelmologly in favour of a per son on trial for any offence they were allowed to give their verdict "Sine cara"--that is to say, without wax, or without going to the formality of inscribing their verdict on the wax tablet (cera). So, when you subscribe your scif "Yours sincerely" to a person you mean- when you are serious, of course—that your re gard for him is aboya beard,

Si-1 believe that, the phrase "Bombay Duck may be explained in the same männer as the phrases "Oxford Hare" and "Welsh Rabbit," and that it is not necessary to suppose that it stands for an earlier "Bombay Dog"- partial translation of the literary Indina (Telegu) name for the fish kukka muni, dog plichard. If the fish had ever been known by the same "Bombay Dog" can any reason be alleged why the name should have been atters ed to" Bombay Dack"? No argument from popular etymology can be brought forward in support of the change from "dog" to "duck, Sir George Birdwnod adduces phonetic analo. gies. Unfortunately they cannot stand the test of examination. Our word "duck" in the seose of fine canvas is not a corruption of dog (the Danish word for "cloth "); on the "Contrary," both-the-English-end-the-Danish-
