METHOD OF GROWING RICH, His simple method was to buy largely of sound securities when panic of ather causes had depressed the market and to sell when the 'ubsequent reaction showed a respectable Profi: on the purchase,

*

In times of panic these large purchases by Mr. Morrison were of enormous service to the Stock Exchange in stopping the rot. The "Times" mentions that he is believed to have kept habitually a large sum in gold as a re- serve against a time of serious financial trouble.

Apart from 'Mr. Mostivos's market operation he had important interests in City lands. Ho owned Basildon House, Finsbury House, and other large blocks of offices, comprising some. of the most remunerative properties in the City of London. There alone would provide him with an enormous income. He was also

oot of the largest landowners in Borkshire, and had big estates.in Scotland.

.

STORY OF A FORTUNE, The fortunes of the house of Morrison were romantically laid by their founder, James Martison, father of the late multi-millionaire,

The rou of a poor Hampshire yeoman, James trudged 10 London in the early eighteen- hundreds, and seeing a notice in the window of a Cheapside drapery warelinuse, applied for and obtained the situation. Mr. James Todd, his employer, liked the lad's industry and per- severance well, and gave him rapid promotion, so that at zy he was manager,

By this time be bad followed the example of many a hero of commercial romances before blm and fallen in love with his master's daugh ter, Mr. Todd favoured the suit, and in order to facilitate the marriage took the young man into partnership.

HOW IT GREW,

It was a wise move from every point of view. The marriage was a happy one, and the busi- ness developed rapidly into the great firm now known as the Forest. Warehouse Company..

Mr. Morrison the elder entered Parliament as Liberal member for St. Iver, and helped to pass the great Reform Bill. To 1828 he bought the present family seat, Basildon House, near Reading, and there ́established the famous art collection which his son, with inherited taste.

and enthusiasm, greatly extended. He died in 1857, worth over four millions sterling, leav- ing three sons, of whom Charles was the eldest, Charles never married, and it is understood that the great fortune is divided by the will of the late millionaire among the brother and sister, whọ kre both over 70 and upmarried. :--

AN ECCENTRIC HOUSEHOLD.

Mr. Charles Morrison, it is not surprising to learn, had bis personal eccentricities It was part of the austere system of his life to avoid publicity in any shape, and notwithstanding that in Basildon Park (which was the seat of the Fane family in the 18th century) he owned a-large and beautiful domain, be' mixed in society practically not at all. He had no fasle for display, and the curious bousehold.at Basildon lived with the utmost plainners.

It was one of his peculiarities that he wore clothes which, if not absolutely shabby, were obviously ready made; and he kept no car-

| ringes of his own, riding--when he'did ride-in

hired cabs.

.

For all this, he was not mean. H gave ge- perously in přivate to charities, and was exceed- ingly kind to bis employers in the City and the country, who are believed to be liberally ro

membered in bis will.
