Lo Tax Chung,
In the absence of Mr. J. Scott Hamton, Mr. P. „Loureiro took the chair. "He said:-Gentlemen, the report and accounts having been in your hands for some days past, 1 propose to follow the usual custom and take them as read: As you will notice from the balance sheet, the directors thought it advisable, after writing off all apparent bad debis, to make a further pro vision of $1,000 as a reservo for bad and doubtful debts. The directors regret that the result of the past year's working has not been so satisfactory asthey would wish to have seen but taking every thing into consideration it must be admitted that on the whole the result is satisfactory Our busi 'ness showed an increase of about 15% over the previous year in spite of the depression which in still with us and which has not yet shown much sign of improvement. Exchange: bas been against us during the whole period under review, but in order to induce the support of the public we have not deemed is advisable to increase our prices, which- were based on a 3/- doller. Before moving the adoption of the report and statement of accounts for the year 1938 I shall be placed to answer any question that may be pai' to me to, the best of my ability
Mr. Blake-There is one item in the accounts and that is that the amount.shown for bad and doubtful debts is enormous and I think that with a little care on the part of the office staff would tend to reduce them, We all know there are people in bis colony who get credit without "paying at all--- -----
The chairman replied that the directors fully appreciated the point" which had been before them at all their meetings and they had im pressed upon their manager the necessity of keeping a close eye on these accounts.
Mr. Blake asked if they were debts contracted by residents or people in the harbaut,
The chairman seplied that they were equally divided. They cond not press people too much or they
would transfer their custom else. where.
There belog no further questions the chair man proposed the adoption of the report and accounis,
Mr. Blake seconded. Carried unanimously.
The chairman-Dividend warrants are ready and may be had on application to the manager. Thank you for your attendance.
