Canton, 31st May, Owing to the frequent occurrence of floods In the riverine districts along the West, Hust and North Rivers, the local gentry are now considering a scheme, whereby it is proposed to cut a canal joining the China Sea with this affected areas, thus causing the water to run into the ocean and effectually prevent it from evarlowing the embankments. The idea is no doubt à commendable one, but the scheme presents great difficulties. The local gentry have now issued circulars to invite public sug gestions on the advisability of the proposed undertaking.
