BATAVIAN CANALS.
A MONUMENT OF DUTCH ENTERPRISE. It is in their wonderful system of canals that wa recognise the tras genius of the Dutch in thair administration of a tropical country. It is impossible to live to Batavia for any length of time.without realising, with ever increasing intensity, the sound judgment displayed in pro viding free circulation of a large volume of water here, there, and everywhere throughout this cosmopolitan city.. Recognising that Eas. tera peoples do not regard the questions of sagitation from the scientific standpoint, the Government, bas by its system of canals re- duced the danger arising from insanitary habits to a minimum. This will be more thor oughly realised when the system has been ex emplified, says a Malay Mail correspondant.
It has already been remarked that there is a vy gradual fall of the land from the southern
bratdary of Batavia to the sea-a fall which is
.constant, from the Preanger high-lands: Bering mind the heavy rainfall, it is obvious that two of the three great difficulties connected with a scheme of canals are, from purely untuval There are then, ontering Batavia at Mt.
