OPIUM PROHIBITION.
AMERICA'S SUPPRESSION ACT.
Opium dreams will end in the United States on April 1, if the federal govoroment is able to execute the aweeping orders, relativa to the drug issued on March 30 from the treasury department, at Washington, D, C. After that date all the drug prepared for smoking found in the country will be seized and destroyed as an illegal importation.
Since the government decided not to allow opium to enter the country after April 1, local Importers have been burrying large assign ments of the drug across the Pacific. Evary vetaal from the Orient has brought big ship- meals, until there is now more than $1,030,000 worth of opium itored in the hooded ware- houses of the city. So much of the drug was being landed that the situation became alarm- ig and Collector Stratton wired, to Washing
ton for instructions.
The department first sent word that no action would be taken-against drug landed before the law went into operation. This advice was received March 10, there being no other instructions until March 30. The departments instructed Collector Stratton to allow opium to le removed from the castonas house until midnight; March 31. If any opium was ro. maved after he is to seize and destroy it,
