Though the Annual Inspection of the Muni-
དྷྭ་
cipal Police Force, which took place yesterday, does not, as in the case of the Volunteers form the culminating point of the year's train- ing, it provides a filling occasion at which to look back upon the work of the force for the paut twelve months. In the case of a Volun tear force, maintained primarily for the defence of the Settlement, the annual Inspection is a real test of the disciplion and efficiency of the Vader the following Committee of Managemen, but with the Police the case is different An idea is pravalent in some quarters that the Police are first and fore-most a military force, but nothing could be more at variance with 'the "real" facts. It is trae that in, times-of amergency the Foreigo, and particularly, the India, branch would form an important factor in the defence of the Settlement,

She had Cost $75,000 new and the sale included besides the ship a large quantity of herdeck fillings, etc, which had been removed and are now in the custody of Tanjong Pagar, There was also included any cargo which might be a ber, there being possibly some cases of tin plates still in the ship. The police force now dum- bers nearly 1,800 men; and, paradoxical though it may seem, strict discipline is necessary to enable the individual members of the police to work independently, and to act upon their own initiative, in the performance of their every-day duties.
