An extraordinary story, showing how the use of wireless telegraphy may lead to the most unforeseen results, comes from Kobs, through Caska, On the 17h insty, the Marine Disaster Relief Association at Tokyo received a message from the Chost wireless telegraph station to the effect that a com- musication had been recorded from a ship ternational code these are the words that are worthy of attention and is not a Ves sel that has exchanged messages with this station before, It is regarded as practically certain that she is a foreign steamer of over 3,000 tons." The message went on to declare that the vessel was asking for aid, an explo» sion having occurred in her engine-room. The wireless operators could not find out the name of the vessel or her location, but they wrote that the ill fated vessel repeatedly ask ed for help by the international code for several hours. She evidently did not know the cipher call for this station. The station repeatedly asked her by the English and it ternational codes for her name, location and owners but no answer was received." Then it! appears a wiseacre was called in and he ex- pressed the opinion that a large vessel had foundered in the Pacific with all hands. Great excitement was created at Choshi wirelea station on receipt of the messige and infor mation was sent to the Naval Department of what had happened. A day or two later the real facts of the case were discovered and they are worth recording if only to show how the vagaries of the system may affect nations in times of emergency. It seems that the British warships Kent, Bedford, and King Alfred, while about 300 miles of Choshi, engaged in manoeuvres, in the course of which they exchanged by way of practice wireless telegrams among themselves. There telegram were intercepted by the Choshi station in a fragmentary form, and the station officials, on attempting to decipher the mes ages by the international code, were dismay ed to find that a pumber of the words were such as would be used, by a ship in danger. that the message received by the Chonat
