The staple commodity forming the-bulk-of the freight is rice from Annam for the China market, which is regularly imported into Hongkong and re-distributed.. During all the tims that Mess. Many, a pioneers of the trade, held a virtual monopoly of the freight the rate per picul wax is cents. On that basis Messrs. Jebsen.&.Co, apparently found it suit- able to operate their steamers. It is matter of little moment to the ordinary reader whether a written compact was entered into between the two forage firms as to thờ freight rate to be maintained. To the shipper and the consignee, however, it was well-known that such an under- standing existed and for the three years that the French and German Grms van steamers in friendly rivalry their uniform charge was one of 35 chots per picul.
