PASSENGERS BROUGHT ON ZO, HONGKONG.
3rd fast,
News was received in the Colony at an early hour this morning of a serious accident that had befallen the river passenger steamer San Cheung trading between this port and Canton. Without undue loss of time a salvage party was organized and promptly despatched to the as sistance, of the crippled vessel as she lies on a sandy bottom in Castle Peak Bay:
"As is usual in sucks circumstances, Dame Rumour has been particularly active and the first; news which abininad currency in the Colony to-day, especially in Chiocso circles was to the effect that the familiar steamer bad foundered in deep, water after striking a rock with a calamitous loss of life in man, women and children being promiscuously drowned, To add colour to the graphic description of the alleged catastrophe, the irresponsible ges sipors ware also responsible for the report that the Tung Wa Hospital directors had despatch ed launches to the acers of the reported dis- aster in order to gasist in the recovery of dead bodies r
THE REAL FACTS
of the case; however, were gathered by a Telegraph representative, who from official and other sources has been able to disprove the alleged correct reports circulated with so much semblance of veracity early in the 'forengos to-day, When, the chairman of the Tang Wa Hospital, Mr. Sin Tak Fon, was seen, he stated that the first news he had bad of any mishap to the Sun Cheung was from our representative. He had not heard of it and so || far as the Tung Wa authorities were concerned he could say that they had received no com- munication asking for assistance and conclud. ed that no lives could have been lost. The conclusion was, happily,, subsequently borne out.
"HOI TONG" LO THE RESCUE. The oficial report brought to Hongkong of the accident to the San Cheung was that made by Capt. Alf., O. Broadbridge of the Bs. Hol Tung, owned by Messrs. Chee Wo "Co. Skipper Broadbridge was piloting his youral into dopgkong early this morning on a voyage from Khogmun on the West River. At thirty minutes past midnight in ni poșii tion two miles west of Pillar Point, the fateful scene of the foundering of the ss. Ying King in the memorable typhoon of July, 19c8, he observed the s.a, Dan Cheung of the Casten. trado oground, and asking for assistance, Captain Broadbridge promptly shaped a course in the direction of the disabled vessel, He brought his own steamer close up to the Sam Cheung, Boon communication WAS, established with Capt. McGinty of the latter vessel from whom he learnt of the San Cheung's upfortunate plight, Capt. McGinty, reported that his steamer's stern tube was damaged and that she was making a great deal of water - which, at the time of the Flot Tung's arrival, was above the stokehold plates, Capt. McGinty further reported the necessity for beaching the steamer ; that he'successfully accomplished, "

́ ́SENDING CHILDREN INTO SLAVERY:ABS A serious accusation has been made against
a section of the Chinese population resident in the Commonwealth, of sending their offspring to China for sale as slaves. That something of- the kind existed had long been suspected, but It was not until cenais information reached the Victorian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children that public attention became directele ed to the matter: "It was stated that a comple of young children, mare infants; the offspring of a Chinese father and an Australian mother, bad been sold to as sent to Chins, whore, the prirchaver won
