Dear Sir,We the undersigned commanders

the fire brigade in Hongkong and it is highly probable that a good deal more would be suga gested regarding their capabilities. Anyone standing to front of that fire, witnessing the fcarious way in which they endeavoured to, in Chinese parlance "Save life," must have been astounded-Bot by ibuir recklessness, not by their fear-to see how these men held them- selves aloft and dared death in its worst appoci. It has already, been said that there men have done marvellous duty.
Men'climbed (be ladders, men brought down. the wonten and children, men belonging to the Hongkong police managed by book or by crook so bring themselves down At the thas of writing these men were still engaged in their task of bringing down people, and whan our representative left they were still at the same job. It may not have occurred to many people that there men who volunteer in the fire brigade service are taking their lives'in their hands
What we should like to command is the magnificent efforts made by the fire master, by Mr. Baker sad by all his assistants.
It has been said thar the fire brigade in Hongkong is slow to work?. If the fire at i and 3, Pottinger Streat in any criterion the brigade in Hongkong is one of the most efficient that has been soon in the East. The only danger is that the Chief Inspector and Mr. Leoo will seriously endanger themselves be cause of their lack of prudence.
At the time of writing it is impossible to tell the origin of the fire or the damage sustained by it. That it is very serious there can be ne doubt. Ooa point that our representative Wishes to emphasise is the fact that the darn devil carelessness of the men attached to the fire brigade could not be bettered.
