when he stood up to 'reply, expressing bis sincere thanks for the compliment paid to him by the Association. As the, first President of the China Association who had the pleasure of visiting the Far East during his term of office, Mr. Scott had naturally much to say as to the working of the parent society. The China Association, be thought, bad undoubtedly done a great deal of good in furthering the interests of British merchants in Chino, had with the aid of the British Association thay would be able to do as much for Japan as they had done for China, The China Association sprang iata, cxistence in 1889, when the fist China dioner was held, at which 130 per- sons were present. The association was duly formed in May 1889; and a committee appointed. Sir James Jaidice was the first president and Mr. Keswick the first cha" man, with Mz., Gandry, without whose able „assistance the society would never have attain ed the position it has, as the first secretary The aim of the Association was to guard and care for the British commercial interests in the Far East An annual dinner was held in „London, and they also had special dianets, at which they had had the plenstire of entertaining many distinguished visitors. They might have an idea that the Association did not work so hard as it might, but this was not so. The committee consisted of able men is all bran- ches Members of the Association proceeding home were invited to attend their committee meelings, and in that way ME Mottison, during his recent visit home, bas been of the greatest service to them. Japan was very ably represented at home at pressal by Mr. C. V..sale, who was invited to join the committes immediately he arrived in London, than whom they could not have a representa. two who spoke his mind níore freely nad knew more of what he was talking about. The China Association had begun with a small member ship, there being no more than 300 members at the end of five-years. The membership now exceeded a thousand, and with Kobe coming into line, as he heard it was, they might expect ä membership of two thousand very shortly. Another thing he would like to impress upon the meeting was that the written reports of the Association were well worth study. They were time, superior to the other shapes. all wrilled by mén engaged in commercial work who knew what they were writing about. The publications were very much valued in higher circles, more especially by the permaned from the Flagstaff on the roof of the Water ent officials of the Foreign Office... The Asso. Police Station at Kowloon, the Harbour Office ciation had a great asset in the goodwill of the Flagstaff, and HLM.S. Tomar, departments of the Government with which they had most business to do—the Foreign and Colonial offices: He could say with pride that the Foreign Office not only received them with the greatest county) and consideration; but paid great attention to every case laid before them because they knew that the Association would never dream of going to them when it had a bad case. Mr. Scott concluded by 10[1]. Three Lights & tical, Red Green Red, minding the meeting that. British merchants in
