16th lust, The annual race heating held under the auspices of the Hongkong Jockey Club was bagan at the Race Coures in the forenoon to day. A dense fog hung, over the Valley until shortly before the saddling ball, but before the starters for the Giss race entered the field the veil of mist had lifted anda.bright warm AUD shone over the green carpet, giving the scene around all the beauty and colour of a summer's day. The private stands bob within and with.... out the enclosure wore, their usual gay aspect. From the stand of the sister,Services near the entrance to the list owner's stand at the far eastern end of the paddock there was displayed a profusion of bunting and evergreen usually associated with the embellishments of the buildings within the Valley during our great raca carnival, The Grand Stand, since the last meeting, ban been altered out of recognition. The structural improvements carried out by the firmofarchitects, Messrs. Leigh & Orange, under the personal supervision of Mr. A. Bryer, havo. afforded increased accommodation forthethous ands of visitors who watched the races from the Stand to-day. Allerations include the doing away with the old flight of staps and in place of it several long tiers of cement-rendered steps give the front of the Stand the appearance of a gallery on which the spectators obtained an excellent view at every stage of the racing. Under the roof, over which the familiar colours of the Jockey Club floated to the breaze, in creased accommodation was also provided. -Long rows of seats gave plenty of room for the Jadios who availed themselves of the stand dur- ing short respites' from promenading on the turf below.
The ladies, with their pretty dresses, cama,in greater numbers after tiffle, and during the after Doon the crowd was large and picturesque. Withinthe ring on the green thousandral batives watched the day's sport with keen interest. The private studds and the booths had their full complement of patrons. The Clubs Lusitano had its booth exclusively for its members.
The Band of the Buffs discoursed pleasing music throughout the day, which went a long way to add enthusiasm to the large number of citizens who had gathered at Happy Valley to enjoy a day's entertainment under ideal cir cumstances both as to the atmospheric condition and the apinndid racing provided by the nume rous stables.

I saw some of the races. For instance, I saw the first, on which I had some money. I lost it! I'don't like to say anything against the starters marker played pranks there might be a rough house if that was a start my aunt is a lady What I want to say before i finish is the ab solutely kind way in which some of the Chinese ladier, who came out of their shell, looked at me. Not only that, but they have, I was going to say, seem to have the real sporting lostinct. Without powder or paint, without vasaline or enamel, they are themselves. It is so seldom that, a foreigner sees them that he is as a role smbarrassed in their company. But not at the races. Most of them, in colloquial language, arB too good to live
Now, I think it is time that the races were allowed to be run. If only the winder of the big sweep would give me half his winnings I might be happy. For a while.
