It is stated in the Decembar number of the. Australian Medical Gasells that the Senate of Sydney University has decided to establish a course for the study of tropical diseases submast in front of the Water Police Station at ject that has been under consideration for a Teim Sha Tsul for the infomation of mixers long time past, and one that has been regarded of vessels leaving the port. They a very necessary id this country. The course, necessarily imply that bad weather is expected which is to be a post graduate one for the pre sent, will not, it is expected, start until the Lent Torm, but that is the outcome of financial considerations and not any dilatoriness on the part of those responsible for, the new "move
ment..
It will be remembered that some time ago the Bishop of North Queensland, Dr. Frod- sham, initiated a movement for the establish ment of a school of research in this direction, and succeeded, bat is not thought likely that *Kis efforia will be extended to the aducational- side of the question so far as the admission of students is concerned-it will be purely a school of research. Also Townsville, where the school is situated, is too far removed from the rest of Australia to be of general use to students, whereas Sydney is central and has already established its Medical School.
What is about to be attempted is regarded as only a temporary measure, and in the profes Steam Launches of Sleat or Wood, Lighters, Steal Buildings and Roofs, Bridge sion there is a feeling of regret that for the Work, and all kinds of Machinary are made on the premises.}
Two powerful Twin Screw Towboats are available for taking Vessels la or out of Dock, and foi taking Salling Vessels in or out of the bay. The doating derrick is capable, of lifting 35 tons.
Tendars will be made up when required find the workmanship and material will be guaranted.
The curt of Docklag, and ropale work, will be found to compare favourably with that of any port la the world,

want of so small a sum as goo or £600 no- thing more than a post-graduate course can be undertaken in this new and very important branch of medical science. The best is, how
ever, to be made of a seemingly bad case, and it is hoped that when the importance of the subject has become more widely known some of the wealthy supporters of the University will find the money necessary to extend the course sufficiently to enable a diploms to be issued 'from the University. At any rato what is about to be done will carry students a step further in their profession than it has been possible for them to go locally in the past.
Thanks to the interest of Mr. Chamberlain' there is now a large 'aad important School of Tropical Medicine at Liverpool (Eng.), another in London, and others are being established ip Europe, while the Colosfil Office makes it a requirement for all colonial medical appoint. ments that the applicant shall, possess the car- tificate of one or other of the recognised schools in this special line. And that we in New South Wales are foterested in such a subject as tropi cal diseases and their treatment is self-evident fact, not only from our close contiguity to the tropics and sub-tropical districts, ‘but also from the experience of the Royal Infirmary in Liver- pool, where in the depth of winter the tropical "ward has been-koowa-to-be filled with patients.:.
At the prescas time-there is no doubt a co siderable amount of tropical disease to Sydney and throughout Australia, but there is a mar vellous absence of speciaksis in their treatment. Some professional men say at once that they know all about them, but others of the more modern school who have been spoken to on the subject do not agres with this-ibey say that while they are able to treat cases symptomatic ally, it should be possible by familiarity with the causes and cares of the true complaints to afford relief much more speedily and more effectually. That is what is aimed at in the course about to be initiated at the University.
Although young men come to 'Sydney from all paris of Australia to qualify to practice in," -the-medical-profession,-and-many-of-them-re- main here afterwards, there are many more
