WAITING for the BND OF THE WORLD,
DELUDED DISCIPLES OF AMERICAN PROPHET,
WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 3 1909. –
New York, Doc. B. Prophet Lee Spangler, a hysterical fanatic who has collected armfuls of dollars from the credulous in different parts of the States by periodically insisting that the end of the world is at hand, recently pitched his camp at Nyack on the outskirts of New York. He predicted that the last tramp would sound yesterday, when the metropolis would blow up, and the citizens who had not fied to Nyack would share the fate of the people of Sodom and Gomorrahe The prophet has, about a hundred crazy adherents in the village, all women, where husbands are trying to horsewhip him or hurt him into the parish pond. As soon rose yesterday the disciple, clad in flimsy white muslin nightgowns and wool caps, listoned for the coming earthquake, prepared to be caught up into heaven.

The Hecht publishes the following as the views of a high official in the Finance Depart- meat on the question of making the sugár business ¦ a. Government ̈monopoly. This authority is reported to have said that the attuude of the Government on the question still remains undecided, Public opinion on the question is divided into two sections. Those in favour of the basiness being made a Govêm- meat monopoly maintain that the collapse la the shares of the Dai Nippon Sugar Refining Company is due to the disclosure of irregulari) ties in management. If the Government offers to buy its business at the present moment, the company might agree to the purchase at a low figure. The irregularities of the com- pany are a question of national importance and the Government cannot remain with folded arms indifferent to the matter. Such people believe that it is now high time for the Govern ment to take over the business and secure this The high priestess, Mrs. Murdock, who
