Oyster Company has a fierce-eyed-creature that is never so happy as when on the trail of a rat. Before the cat came, rais romped about the place. Now the Morgan Oyster Company will give a prize for any trace of a Fat about its buildings. The Seattle Trans- fer Company has a cat whose ability as a ratter has been frequently demonstrated. There are several of the warehouses on the water front that have felines whose breeding especially adapts them to the anti-pest work. Except for mildly frightening rats, the aver age sleek, contented house cat is useless. It has been observed in many cases that the presence of a cat of any kind serves to frighten rats off the premises, but the real benefit has not been fully determined. It has also been observed that the hunting in stinct reaches his highest development in the female cat. Just as the Angora and the HONGKONG, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20, 1909. Manx cats were raised, the scientists hope to specialize the hunting instinct in the rat exterminator. That the improved strains will be of large size in order to cope with big rats, will be necessary. Also it is likely that its voracity will detract somewhat from its qualities as a household pet, Prof. Robert Koch, during a recent visit to Japan, sug gested the following system for employing cats in anti-pest work:
