THE POSITION OF LLOYD'S..

Almost from time immemorial underwriting- at Lloyd's has been regarded as the most des sirable and most creditable form of occupation: in the City of London, if not in the whole world of commerce, and the isslitation of which the underwriter is a member the most con servative of all the corporate bodies in the Kingdom. Long before younger sons of the nobility astonished their friends and provided welcome material for editors of Society papers by taking seat in stockbrokers offices, the names of distinguished families otherwise unconnected with commerce of any kind were appearing at the bottom of marine insurance policies,

During the present twenty years the effects of keen competition, resulting in venturesome speculation, have been felt severely here, as in other business undertakings. "Premium rates bave fallen to the extent of 30 or 40 per cent, better" found") has been small in comparison -ome say that it is little more than imagin aty. The competition originally created by the increase in the number of marine insurance companies, provided with large reserves and in- dependent of Lloyd's, ban now extended to Lloyd's itself, where at one time it was rogard.

ences no one but themselves,

But outside, if not inside, of the majestic quite of rooms on the upper floor of the Royal Exchange, even the position of Lloyd's is no- longer regarded complacently with the sense of absolute security which, for over a century, bas characterised the attitude of the mercantile and shipping community towards that unique body, upon which it relies to such a large extent for protection against loss of cargo, ships, and freight. This wavering, while resulting in, has also been in a small degies encouraged by, the measures which have recently been adopt- ed by the committes of Lloyd's with the con- sent of the members. Without their consent fresh statutory powers would have been neceis sary. The voluntary subinitting of their books to an annual independen! audit by the under- writers seems to bave had the effect of CR- couraging, instead of dispelling, the 'fears of pessimists, who are saying, "Now you will sen that we were right. When the auditors make their reports to the committee there will be some startling disclosures,"

A maro inconsistent altitude it is not easy to imagine, but unfortunately these alarmists may find more material for criticism to the news which may be forthcoming shortly that several underwriters bave decided to close their ac counts and resign their membership, since the the underwriting business are so very rare that a batch of these coming at the present time may however, from inquiries made among members who may be relied upon for impartiality and accuracy that these resignations, so far as the names of the men are koowo, will be due, not to any objection to disclosing the state of affairs, but to the present consitions being such as in many cases so peclude the possibility of making sufficient income out of under- writing-it-must be taken into account that the underwriting member not only pays a sub, scription and, bas his deposit of several thous and locked up in tenst investments held as security by the Committee, but if, as in the majority of cases, he does not "write" for him. self, he has to pay some one to do so for him. Then, too, many of the men who thus do cot tako, any active part in the business have re- garded underwriting moxo as a possibly lucra tive hobby than a means of livelihood, treating Lloyd's Rooms as a, club, at which they are entitled to drop in when they have nothing' better to do and havo's chat with their repre sentative on their prospects or with their friends on things in general. This hobby is no longer as lucrative as it was, if it is not actually ao expensive one, and Lloyd's has lost much of that social prestige which formerly distinguish. ed it from any other business in the City.

The failure of a Lloyd's underwriter is an event far more rare than the occurrence of a twenty-ninth day in February, and it would be little short of a national calamity, so far as the commercial community is concerned, if an in- stitution of such actiquity and such universal reputation and influence, one, that in the world of commerce holds as highs a position as the national finance, should lose any of the con fidence that it has justly won by the stability and integrity of its committee and members. But it must be confessed that by reason of the wide extension in no way connected with ship. ping, it has developed a business justifiably regarded as less sound...
