THE CATILE TRADE,

IMPORTATION INTO THE PHILIPPINES.

Figures covering the importation to the Fhilippines of live cattle for the past ten years indicate a continued annual increase from the total of 193 bead received during 1897, to 43,157 head, valued at $1,055,3,6, imported during 1908, according to the annual report of the Collector of Curioms. This number, embraces principally beef cattle, but includes occasional small consignments of breeding and draft animals. Chinese caitle continued to lead in this trade, although the 27,895 head received from that source in 1905 of Chinese cattle imported during 1907, while animals from the French East Indies to the number of 14,574 represent an increase over those received during the previous year of 13013 head. The change in this trade is the result of the recently increased proportion of diseased animals among those from the China coast, and the consequent restrictions placed upon importations from that source, which han led to larger purchases in the French East Indian market

It is usual to hold a bazar immediately before Christiaad nick the varied, examples of the skilful needlework of the orphans is displayed for sale, and follow ing past precedents the Bazaar will take place this year, the opening ceremony at the City reduction of 8,179 head from the number Hall taking place at 2 o'clock on Monday after noon. His Excellency Sir Frederick Lugard will take part in the format proceedings and many well-known ladies in the Colony will take a part in assisting to ensure the success of the function. It need bardly be said that the display this year will be quite on a par with those acen in past years and the hearts of the Sisters should be glad deend when they come at the close to appre ciate the generosity of the Hongkong public. Coming as it does on the eve of Christmas, the Bazaar should offer on outlet for those who desire to salact suitable presents for their friends at the season of rejoicing, while at the same time they will have the satisfaction of knowing that they are contributing to the welfare of an exceedingly wonhy institution.
