AN AUSTRALIAN CHINAMAN'S CLAIM.

In the Summary Jurisdiction. Court, this morning, Charles Hing, who was stated to have been an interpreter, brought an action against Cheang Kai and four other merchants, of Wing Lok Street and Queen's Road West, to recover $534 for services alleged to have been rendered,

Morrell, of Mestre. Goldring, Barlow and Mor rell, represented the defendants.

It was stated that plaintiff was an Eng- lish-speaking Chinaman, having lived in Aus tralla for twenty years. While in Australia- he acted as interpreter, to the Government. Two years ago he returned to Hongkong. The defendants were all partners in a rice shop, and cogaged the plaintiff es ao interpreter. The agreement was that be should be paid between $800 and $1,000 in a lump sum. The plaint ff trusted them and did not take anything. in writing. Plaintiff interpreted for them for

It was stated by prosecutor that at 6 p.m. ba the day in question, he was on duty in the Southern Fairway, when he saw defendants' boats lying alongside the praya wall between the Canton wharf and Wing Lok Street, the "yulos" of at the defendants being in the. water. Witness had warned the defendants previously against the practice. On returning, he found the "yulos" still in the water, and on. being approached by witness, the defendants started to pull them' In.
