The expenditure on this cipate, be of only a uifibg smoont. The only other item in the report to which I bave not alluded is the paragraph which states that for some time past a divergence of views has existed_between_the_Chinese_Government and the board of directors on the subject of the rights of the company in the Kaiping Basin, and that negotiations, are proceeding with a view to arriving at an amicable settlement Under these circumstances it is not expedient or practicable that we should enter into any details on this sub'ect to-day, but I cannot leave it without saying that the Board, on be- half of the shareholders, have to recognize their indebtedness to His-Majany's Foreign Office for the support which has been accorded to them in the maintenance of the Company's rights. As regards the development of the Port of Ching,wang-tao, this has naturally been affected by the unfavourable conditions of trade, in Norb China, and although the earnings for the past year show a falling off, there is no doubt that the advantages of the port are be. coming increasingly recognised. Perhaps 1 ought to mention, in case any rumour of it should have reached our shareholders, the there has been an catbreak of a form of plag us in the, naighbourhood of Tangshan, which caused a momentary disturbance in the labour supply.
As regards the prospects for the currant year, the report states that, notwithstanding the ad- verse condulous of trade which till continu di the sales for the first saved mouths show a slight increase in toonage, compared with the same period of 1907-8. This increase in the sales ja accompanied by a slight diminution in vajuc, but so small as to be quite noappreciable-
the other hand, as 1 ̧have already stated, the cast of production for the first sever mouths of the current year was appreciably lower than that of the same period of the past year, with which we are dealing. So far as our informa tion' goes, tha profils carded during the current
