building for New York City is to be erected Mrs. Holliday, 194 Chinesa, 8 Japanese, and to America by the direct route "his been altered Ferial, Venite: Stainer, Pralms': of the asthBerlin, W..F.. on Eighth-avenues on the two blocks from Thirty-first to Thirty-third streets, with the prins cipal front on Eighth avenue and the facades on the streets extending back a distance of 333 feet. In studying the problem, the aim has been, while keeping in mind the practical utes of the building, to give it the monumental grandeur which a Government structure of such importance should possess. While the design of the exterior has been carefully siu- died in its relation to the Pennsylvania Ter minal Station now le process of erection, the purposa has been to give it a diviinicily Gov. ernment aspect. The question of the props relation between the two immense structures, which will stand very near each other, has been carefully weighed with respect to style, material, and scale," "

The principal fade will consist of a row of Corinthian columos, in pure white marble, twenty in number, terminated at north and south end by pavilions containing niches, This colonnade corresponds to the public corri dor, which extends the entire length of the figade. The fagides on the street "are a conti nuation of the same architectural motive, pilasters being used in gread of columns, also terminated in pavilion at the west, and; Ample access is given to the building by stepi on the principal façades and on the street façades. The ground on which the post office will stand will cost the Government $1,650,549 (3,322,108). The architects are the noted firm of McKim, Mead, and White.
