Above these there are still two grades of heavy horses. The first are those used for ordinary draft purposes, and are commonly found drawing the omoibuses of Patia, where such vehicles are still in use. These weigh from 1,100 to nearly 1,500 lb.
Next comes the fashionable "couch horse smoke, its coal mines, and its sweating of persons of luxury, which weighs from sco to (8 naked' 'coolies who pour 1,500 tons of

Everywhere the' traveller is pursued by ricksha.coolies, who refuse to be shaken off, cajoled by too eager shopmen; and, worst of all, he bas an ugly sensation of being at continual contest with his besiegers for the right value of every sen in his pocket. Between these extremes of impossible illu- ion (which, indeed, one has not the right to expect of any place or people) and of uncom promising reality stands the city of Kyato, than which no more charming or typical piece of Japanese life could be found. It bears every mark of the progress in Western things which has penetrated even to remote hill villages- electric light, turbines, and trams, while here. and there among its curio shops, you may sce figures of the Venys de Mils, of Queen Victoria, and of Nelion, cheek by jawl with a Buddha ortke Eleven Faced Kwan-on.
