The Attorney-Gederal (Mr. W. Rees Davies, X.C.), Instructed by Mr. Dannys, of Messrs Danays and Bowley, prosecuted. The de fendant, who pleaded not guilty, was representi ed by Mr. H. G. Calihrop, with whom was Mr. C. E. H. Beavis, of Masses. Wilkinson and

The jury consisted of Mours. W. Nicholls (foreman), H, Rutanjee, H. R. Herialet, F. H. J. G. Jonckhier, J. É. Dauíslren, J. Witchell and D. M. Neilsen.

The Attorney-General, outlining the particu- lars of the case, stated that defendant was at one time lo the compradore department of. Hamars, Skott and Company. He had been there for over three years, leaving the buni. ness in June last. The stolen goods were kept in a safe in the compradore's room. In November last the lock of the safe got out of order and a new lock was got by the defand- ant. One of the keys was kept by the assistant compradore, the other being. kept in the safe. - Dunng the time defendant was employed thera the koy was kept by him in the absence of the compradore, and he had ample time to take a CLIT.

Shortly after six o'clock on the afternoon of November 1818 the assistant compradore went. › out, having locked the safe, and in the presence of a number of bis brothers put away sum of money. He was away for about an hour, and in consequence of what, one of his brothers discovered be was sent for. On his return be found the safe volocked and the money, gone. At that time there was no trace of the thief, but Detective Sergeant Appleton; while examining the premises, discovered two pairs of footprints on the ledge of the window of the compradore department. There was no other way of effecting an, entrance into this part of the building except through the window, which could be reached by walking along the

·ledge (a foot wide) which led to the window. Suspicion fell on the defendant, and the Can- tom steamers were watched. From information received, Sergeant Appleton boarded the

· French steamer Gkarlet, Hardouin and arrested the defendant on the 21st-three days after the

robbery bad been committed. When arrested he had S17 odd in his possession, besides a quantity of clothing, he sergeant subse- quently visited defendant's lodgings and in a box be found a pocket book, which was Identified by the prosecutor as his proper ty. In the middle of the pocket book was op elastic band which the compradore had seen on himself, making the identification clearer. Again defendant was searched and in this socks were found two Stoo bills and two Što notes. Tho'two 5:00 notas formed a portion of the money removed from the safe.

"Keeping money in one's socks, the Attorney: General continued, was not an uncommon thing In this country, but the very fact that defendent, having so much money in his possession, when his calary was Stg per month, was subject for suspicion, it was always a difficult matter to identify money, but where a man in found in possession of stolen property, pro- perty which could be identified as in the case

defence, said that it was extremely probable Mr. Galthrop, in stating the case for the that on the night of the 18th the safe was not locked that nobody was left in charge of the compradora department at night; that large sums of money and jewellery were stored there, that this state of things was known to people and that on that night some evilly.disposed person entered the room and finding the safe open cleared it out and west off, „*

Witoasses were then called, the object being to prove an alibi, after which Counsel address ed the jury..

TROUBLE IN SARAWAK.

BATANG LUPAR REBELS ROUTED

HY THE RANGERS,

From a report by Mr. Guanygbame, in the Sorginak Gazitie, it appears that he left Kuch ing, on August 29, with seventy of the Sarawak Rangers, under a couple of Sergeants. Upon arrival at Simanggang, they were joined by Mr. Bailey (the Resident), Mr. Owen and Mr. Lang, and commented the river journey, passing Kampong, Lubak Autu, Sungei Mipi, to Bunges Delok. Here four of the enemy's boats, which were hidden in ambush, were discovered and destroyed, and a camping place made.

FATAL AMBUSH:

On September 7, the report continues, leaving the resident with a strong guard and all the

boats, we commenced our march through the cuemy's country. We bad with us the Rangers and about two thousand Dyaks. Werenched our destination for the night, Jelish Nanga, at 2.29. p.m. after a rather trying match, the path being a very bad one and not improved by the rain."

About thirty Balaus, instead of halting here for the night as ordered, rushed on and at dark fell into an ambush prepared by the enemy with the result that they lost three men killed and had another wounded. The enemy had one killed. During their retreat they must have come under a very beavy fire.
