COUNT. TOLSTOI,

SOME PERSONAL ReminiscenCES.

Zealous friends and admirers of Count Tol stoi have for some time bean cudgelling their brainy how best to celebrate the great man's eightieth birthday. One of the projects, was to institute a pilgrimage to Yasoays Polyana, the author's country seat near Tula. Another brilliant brain evolved the idea of erecting a statue, as if the Russian Cavernment would allow anything of the sort!

Tolstoi bas several times during the past few. weeks written to say that he does not wish any of these celebrations. Only the other day be dictated a letter whichfil saw, in which he pathetically refers to his old age and his desire to be left in peace. I do not wish to receive deputations," heļsays, "There would be loss of dignity on both sides. I should feel like a fool myself, and I am sure the members of the deputations would feel foolish 100"

The Countess-has-waitian that the Count is too ill to receive any visitors this week, and that even the usual family birthday gathering is to bá abandoned this year.

"When I first met Tolstoi some sixteen years sgo he was busy on relief work in the starving province of Riazan. He was staying at an estate called Beghichevka on the banks of the river Don, which was then frosen over, as it was mid-winter.

Every morning the Count would pull on bis. loog felt boots reaching well above the knees, put on his rough. untanned sheepskin coat and bis fur cap, and lead the way out 10 the yard, where two small sledges stood ready.

In the first sledge the Count and I would take our places behind bis"old white horse. and in the second his daughter, the Countess Mario, with a young man who awisted in the relief work, would follow us.

Tolstoi never uses a whip, and seldom troubles about the reins. He talks to bin

After the vegetarian meal, the men of the party would sit at one end of the long table and engage in conversation "or" in games of chess, while the ladies buried themselves in hos ehk duties and sewing, while the Coun tess Marie would lie inimersed in the accounts of the soup-kitchens and relief work generally,
