on the rollers are of the most flimsy descrip- don, being small mushroom rollers about three inches diameter with a large flange at the top They are held down by a small split pin about.. a quarter of an inch thick. The changes in gradient could have been considerably improv ed at small expense, and most of the curves in the line chuld have been left out.
At the top part of the line there are three very severe curves of comparatively small radius, beginning at about 5,700 feet from the bottom, which cause considerable friction on the cable, or would if it were working, and the largest curve is on's dip in the line. Mr. Darison proposes that this part of the line be abandoned entirely and the rails taken op. new track should commence at 5,200 feet with slight curve on an even gradient, of about 1,000 feet radius, crossing Monide's Road further to the north than at present and pa ing up the valloy to the west of the Strawberry.

The position of the passing plice half way up the track Mr. Denison does not propose to alter as it is on a straight piece of line of evéo gradient. liable to be washed away by any heavy shower. If it can be done I should advise that all em bankments should be pitched with stoses of a cubic foot or so in size.
.THE. RAILS.
I consider the rails, which are about jo 15 per yard in weight, are heavy enough for the light carriages capable of carrying twenty par sons, but when the traffic increases, which, from experience of similar railways, is, in my opinion, inevitable, heavier carriages with more accommodation would be required and heavier rails would be necessary. By that time, how- Fever, the rails would require to be renewed in any case owing to ordinary wear and rust. The gauge is, in my opinion, too narrow, and the carriage going round the curves would have a tendency to overturn, especially if the passen- gera were_on_oot.side as, might happen on a sunny day:
The sleepers, joints and fastenings are too light and the outer rails which have to bear HUGHES & HOUGH, : all the strain of the grip, brikes in case of a

MR. DENISON'S ADVICE.
All dips in the line or vertical concave curves should have a radius of at least 4,000 feet if, possible, so as to prevent the rope rising off the rollers to any extent when working.
If the line is reconstructed as mentioned. Mr. Deniton advises that the gaoge be increased from a feet 6 inches to about four fret, andthe; present sleepers should be replaced by strenga and heavier ones, which should be bedded in the cement concrete covering the track. All pulleys should be made simply so that they can be re-cant locally 41 they wear out. The rope should not be eadless as at present, but should go simply from one car to the other passing round the driving drums at the bottom of the line, and the length of cable required will only.
This will save at be miles instead of 3 least $1,000 per annum in cost of cables, and the friction on the rope and the power required to avercome it will als be reduced by 000- half"
As regards the power, Mr.. Denison advocates the sale of the Pelton with machinery and piping, and the obtaining of power from a high pressure engine and boiler situated at the top end of the lipe. As
are joined together at the ends a single fish the traffic increases, larger care will be requir plate under the flange, but are not held downed and a beavier rope, but the power recom- to the track except by the small wedges' above. | mended will be sufficient for two cars with mentioned. In the case of a rail being gripped",
by the brakes just below a joint, is my opinion the sail would be torn up and the carriage apsel.
SYSTEM UNSUITADLE.
Mr. Denison"goes on to say that both the borigoatal and vertical rollers are far too small
