LAUNCH AT THE KAWASAKI YARD.
The Japan Chronicle, of 20th ultimo, reports: —Yesterday · afternoon, at 4.30 o'clock, the Miyasaki Mars, 'now being built at the Kawa saki' Dockyard, Kobe, for the Nippon Yusen Keisha, was successfully launched. Mrs. Kato wife of the Vice-President of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha, christened the new boat. There was a large number of people present including the leading residents of Kobe, Japanese and foreigners,

After the launch, Mr. Matsukata, Proside at of the Kawasaki Dockyard Company, made a few remarks. He thanked those present for their attendance in spite of the inclamency of weather, and went on to say that skipbuilding in Japab had made remarkable progress. Orders were
now being received from China and other foreign countries. Recently his yard had sent in an estimate for the con- struction of a Russian Volunteer Fleet steamer at the request of the company, but he was unable to say whether the climate would be accepted or not. is competing with the skip2 building yards of England and other countries, || Japanese yards would be confronted with cer tain difficulties-Japan had to seek ber supply "of materials fróm abroad -from Europe "or America-and pay a duly of 50 per cent, on them. Mr. Kato, Vice-President of the Nippo Yasco Kaisha, next spoke and dwelt on the progress made in shipbuilding. He thanked the Kawasak! Yard for the successful mach of the Miyasaki-maru.
Governor Hattori then addressed the ass. sembly on beball of the Japanese guests. After expressing thanks for the invitations, he refer red to the successful result of the launch of the
Miyaki. He had witnessed many launches of steamers in the past eight years, but none was more successfully carried out than the pre- sent. Among the many aits and crafts that had made progress in Japan, that of shipbuild ́ing had noʻparallel, and great credit was due to. Mr. Matsukata for the part he had taken therein..
The Miyasaki-marx, 8,700 tons, gross, in à aister-ship. of the Mishima-moru, "which was lately launched and is now being equipped in the barbour. She is claused too As and M.C. at Lloyds, is built of steel, is 465 feet long, 56 faet" wide, and 341 feet deep, with double' 'screws, and 'is fitted with triple expansion sur- face condenser, capable of developing 7,300 borss-power. Her designed speed is sixteen knots:

THE WEATHER,
The following report is from Mr. F. G. Figs Director of the Hongkong Observatory :--
On the 4th at 539 The typhoon has reached the Laron coast to the NF. of Manila. It seems to be moving rather quickly towards W. or W.N.W. and it will probably enter the China Sea to-night.
"On the gib at 9. —Red South Cone and Drum holsted (indicales a typhood S.E, of Colony boyand goo milas,),
At 11.55a-The barometer has risen rapid ly in Manila, and fallen moderately over Chiva and Formosa,
The typhoon is situated to the W, of Luzon, probably in about 17′′ Lat, and 117* Long. It contiques to move towards W.N.W.
· Pressure has given, way over S. Tapan. It remains high over the N, part of the Sea of Japan.
Bad weather may be expected over the N. part of the China Sen, and strong N.E, winds to gales in the Formons Channel,
Hongkong Rainfall for the 24 hours ending at 10 am to-day, 9.00 inches.
