It is an unhappy coincidence that M. Foppa's predecessor at the Russian Consulate, M. Laptew, met his death at the hands of an
sin, just about two years ago,
The incident the news of which evoked the widest and deepest regret when it became kogwo yesterday morning-took place about 1.30a.m. As that time, M. Poppe was asleep in bed at the Consulate, and the building was fastened up for the night There was, how. erot, access to the Interior by a door in the rear and by a satrow corridor. The Consulate was in darkonin and these circumstances necessarily lead to the inference that the man | who had designs on M. Poppe's life must have been familiar with the Coonulate premises and the whereabouts of the Consul's bedroom and his general babile of living; otherwise he could hardly have entered the building and found his way about it and performed the distardly deed in the dark, as was the case.

Dr. Schreyer and his locum tentos that is to br, Dr. Schreyenberg, were at the Consulate examining, cleaning and dressing M. Poppe's wound. They performed two surgical opera tions, the second being necessitated by the late discovery of the "incision in the liver. All that these two skilled surgeons could do was done as promptly and well and thoroghly as possible in such circumstances, and all the many friends of M. Poppe will devoutly hope that the patient may recover. We are glad to be able to state that there is a chance that Mr. Poppe's life may be saved, though the wound is of the gravest charácter, and the dab ger of the hot weather producing unfavourable development is very great.
