with regard to the" dangers of opilim eatingTHE and smoking in Ceylon, and su to the difficul ties of suppressing the opium habit in Hong: kong. Sir Henry Blake, from his official connection with both Colonies, can speak with authority, and his views have doubtless areasted the attention and commanded the respect they deserve. Hongkong, as Sir Henry points out, is at present suffering from acute commercial depression, and be apprehends that the pro posed suppression of the opium traffic will to sult in a loss of revenue which cannot but cripple the Colony. He foresees also an sion of the law by opium smokers, who, once the public "divans" or smoking saloons are abolished, will resort to private deos, of which thera a'e many thousands in the Chinese quar- ters of the City. Aipre, ent these private revorts

No claims will be admitted after the goods gerated by faddins and alaimisis and Sir Henry Blake's letter amply confirmy the view wa’have always had. The former;js -used-that latter is positively abused, and pro- duces far more deleterious effects. Sir Henry Blake, it will be noted, shares this view. – “Ho' bac, of course, suon for kimsall the mischief wrought among native races by alcohol.
