Japanese tonnage, gained 241,253 tons, and Russia 142,358 tons. Ger mau tourage increased by 67,059 tons, Datch 62 190 tons, French 20,453 tans, Norwegian and Swedish-18,701 tons, Austrian 12,882 tons and Spanish 65,567 tons. The taking over of the Tanjong Pagar Docks by the homo Government has directed a good deal of attention to Singapore. The premises of the company formed in 1863 have a space wharf affording berthage for a large number of vessels above time with sufficient water along- side for ships of the heaviest draught, and are protected by a breakwater from the strength of the tide. The storage capacity for coal is 200,000 tops. There are two graving docks and the Victoria Dock, fitted with modern appliances. The earning power of the Board' controlling the docks has shown a steady increase since the taking over of the concerni and considerable attention has been given to the subject of extension works. The. Govern- ment of the Straits Settlements has also in bend the construction of a basis of 270 acres and a quay of nearly a mile in length for the accommodation of steamers, the works exten sion involving an expenditure of over two million pounds.
