NOTICE

MORE BOMBS AT CALCUTTA.

Calcutta, May 24.

On arrival of the Pori passenger train at Howrah, this morning, quite a sensation was caused when two bombs were discovered in a third class compartmeal,

- Besides the bombs the Government Railway - Police also found five tin cases. Though the two bombs found ware ant in the cases, the latter had evidently been made to accommo date them,

The discovery was made in a most ordinary way. On arrival of the train at Howrah, and after all the passengers had, alighted, the sta tion staff according to custom went through. each of the compartments in order to discover if anything bad been left behind by passen- gers. When the third class carriage in ques- tion was reached the bombs were discovered.

The Railway Police were informed and took charge of the bombs, which were then sent to the Criminal Investigation Department and are awaiting cxamination' at the hands of Major'], Black, Chemical Examiner,

The presence of the five tio cases lands. 'to the belief that thern must have originally been five bombs.

The curious part is the shape of the missiles, which, while appearing to be nothing but harm. less pieces of bambog were in reality deadly bombs.

The pieces of bamboo' were each about eighteen inches long and were stuffed full of explosives. Both ends were blocked with what looked like sin coated with mud end to the bamboo casing three holes, probably for fuses, had been bored. These were also stopped up.

The two Bengalis arrested in the grounds of the Lieutenant-Governor's house and the other Bengali in Mr. Oldham's compound al Darjeeling a few days ago are believed to be harmless.

Their antecedents are being enquired into. The constables on duty in the Northern part of Calcutta bave, during the last'fortnight, been subjected to hostile treatment. A few days ago two constables were assaulted and it was only due to the arrival of a European Sergeant that they were saved from meeting with bodily injury.

Last night, at about 11 o'clock, an Indian con stable was found in Raja Brojsndra Street, fifty yards from the Old Chitpor thana, with a; deep wound in his right breast. The weapon with which the outrage was committed, a dou- ble edged stiletto seven inches long, was found near by. It had penetrated into the unfortunate man's lungs...

No clue has been discovered as to the identity of the assailant..................

The Commissioner of Police bar issued instructions to police officers how to deal with auspicious packages found lying about. The dominant note of the instructions is "caption" and the duty of þekt constables is extremely simple. They are not to touch a suspected bomb themselves or allow others to touch it, but to send word to the Divisional Super intendent, who will arrange for its removal.

As to the steps to be then taken the most important point is to raise the object, taking care to keep it in exactly the same position as [583

when found and deposit it very gently, in a bucket of water where it should be kept im. mersed for twenty-four hour. After that it may be regarded as fairly safe, but even the act of immaralon is not without risks, as thera are certain chemicals which explode through contact with water, and it is desirable to vacate the room as quickly as possibis after immer- alng the bomb," These hints, it is to be hoped, ¿will hava tha; of preventing fatalities fa he discovery and capture of
