The fire raged before 45 ile gale for more Shan twelve hours, defying the utmost efforts of the combined fire departments of Chelsea and several near-by cities and a large detachment of Boston fire-fighting apparatus. The fire area, which was in the form of an othpse, a mile and a half long and half a mile wide at it broadest part, extended diagonally across the city from a point near the boundary between Everett and Chelsea to the waters of Chelsea
Cicek.
It was difficult for the fire man to attempt to check the onrush of the fames and their main efforts used were to prevent a spread of the fire on either side. The last stand before the gale was taken at Chelsea Square late in the afternoon and for hours a doubtful battle was raged. At 'clock word was passed that the firemen were winning and with renewed energy the contest was pressed. At in g's official announcement was made by Chief H. A. Spencer that the fire was

A shop coolie carelessly settlog fire to a bundle of crackers very nearly brought about another wild runaway this morning. It was fortunate, however, that something unforeseen occurred to check the runawy, otherwise there would be no knowing what might have hap pened in such a crowded thoroughfare, As it was three lads were slightly injured and a public ricksha totally wrc ed.
Al about eight o'clock this morning a pony, attached it was driven up outside one of the shops near the Ceural Market, where the driver alighted to misko a purchase. Up to the present time only about twelva witnesses have been examined. Thers remains about eleven, mare to take the stand and it does to at all seem likely, that the trial will conclade natit some time next week.
At this morning's trial Cheong Yau, the mim who confessed to taking part in the mu dom, and who has since turned King' evidence, was submitted to cross-examination by be. Hon. D. Ho Kai, counsel for the defence. Yesterday, it will be remembered, Cheung Yau, under ihn examination of Mr. W.. Rors Davies, R.C. (Attorney-Genera1), gave his story of how the murders were committed.
Crois eximined, Cheung Yau stated that alier he and the three defendants had slain Luke Wong Sam Sau, the other deceased, rushed'in his assistance, but was overpowered.
Drillo Kai-Did he struggle ? Witness-Yes.
Were any of you wounded?-Yes," I was (pointing to a scar on his feet, where he alleged Wong Sam Sau kicked him).
While you were struggling with Wong: am Sau did you seise the boy don't think it is quite right to say “ I seized him." Why don't you cay the others? They were there, too,
How did you seize Luk Sang? From behind |or in front?—I can't remember exacily, Its two
years ago since this took place.
What did the first and second defendants do? -I don't know, you see, we all joined together to do a certain object." I can't tell what they did, I was so confused.
When you first sighted Luk Sang was he in the valley or on the top of the mountain?-On the ridge of the mountain,
But you said you killed Luk Sang in the valley-It was hot in the valley.
But you said at the Magistracy that all were killed in the valley? -1 told the magistrate that they were killed on the hifi where it was level. So what was written by the magistrate was incorrect?
The Chief Tunice--I don': think that the word valley" as used by you, Dr. Ho Kai, is understood by witness.
The witors then explained what be meant.. The murder took place on a path, he said,
overlooking the valley. N
