HORRIBLE TRAGEDY IN OSAKA

SEQUEL TO SPECULATION

Early on the morning of Friday (8th instant) Kotani Seilchl, a merchant at Kawaramachi, s-chome, Osaka, murdered his mother, wife,

and two children, and then attempted to com-

mit suicide. The murderer is only 35 years of-age, and is a native of Totteri prefecture, coming from a family fairly well-do-do. It appears that Kotani some sims age read of and

was much interested in the remarkable succeis

of Mr. Suruki, of Tokyo, who had made a

considerable fortune by speculation in shares, and resolved to follow Lis example. Despite the protests of his parents, Kolani, proceeded. to Osaka in October with Y6,000.. In February last he tried his fortune in speculation on shares and before long bad lost Y5,000. Disap pointed at this, he took a house in Kawara machi in March last and rpened a pipe shop, but business did not pay as he wished and he b came despondent. Business went from bad to worse, and at last the unfortunate. mab seems to have decided that the best thing for him and his family would be to leave this world, for be reasoned that if he committed

would be left in a miserable plight. On Thurs day he went to the borse races in connection with the Army festival and there he probably inst more money. At all events he re turned home the worse for liquor, but went to bed almost immediately and was soon asleep, His sleeping apartment was an "upper room which he occupied with his wife and a litle girl baby, two years old, while his mother and a boy four years old slept in a room below. About 4 o'clock the man got up and lock.a smal sword, which he kept fur self-defence,

As far as Mr. Crockett goes, it might be sup. posed that he was pretty good judge of his, owa book, and that he was right in describing it at only light collection of short stories But that is not so cestals. When his publisher was asked about it be said: "It's moderately good; I cannot say it's light if he meant can't say 'it's light" we are willing to believe him. And yet it might easily be a novel for all that. Hence the question remains unsolved, What is a novell-New York Sun,

we simply point to its record. It has done great. things, and it is certain to clique the excel- -no medicina which can be used with greater lent work. There is-we may honestly affirm and more reasonable faith and confidence. It nourishes and keeps up the strength during those periods when the appetite falle and food cannot be digested. To guard against imita- tions and substitutions, our "trade mark" is put on every bottle of "Wampole's Prepara tion, and without it none in genuine. It is palatable as honey, and contains the nutritive and curative properties of Pura Cod Liver Oil, extracted by us from fresh, cod livers, com bined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophos phites and the Extracts of Malt and, Wild [510 Cherry Taken before meals it creates an

appetite, aids digestion, renews vital power, drives out disease germe, makes the blood.rich red and full of constructive elements, and gives

many who had abandoned hope. Dr. S. H back to the pleasures and labours of the world McCoy, of Canada, says: "I testify with pleasure to its unlimited usefulness as a tissus builder. Its curative powers can always be relied upon, it makes a new era in medicine, is beneficial from the first dose and represents effective "medical treatment of the twentieth century, "You can trust it as the Ivy does the Qak" One bottle convinces. DRCFINITION OF A NOVEL,

AFTER MUCH DISCUSSION QUESTION REMAINS UNSOLVED.

In the course of a trial in London the other day the important question was raised, What is a novel? The action was taken by a firm of -publishers to recover damages or statements

d to be'defamatory; and it is to be gather- ed from the reports of the hearing that the plaintiffs objected to a cocular, issued by the defendants, a rival firm, wherein it was pro claimed that a certain forthcoming "novel" by the sometime Reverend S. R. Crockett was poi properly a novel at all.

Now, the plaintiffs were the publiabels of this book, whatever it was, and they held it toʻbean Injury to them to deny that the said book was a novel, even though the author himself was responsible for the denial. For it seems that Mr. Crockett. had arranged to publish two boogs at about the same time, one through the plaintiff firm, the other through the defendant firm; when a controversy arose concerning the adrisability of sending out mesterpieces by wholesale Mr. Crockets, by way of reassuring one firm, wrote to explain that the book in the other firm "was only a lighi collection of stories and not a full-dress novel." This un fortunate opinion, which was presently given io the world, is said to have put the publishers of the novel in deshabille to a great deal of trouble and expense. For not only did they' find it necessary to spend $600 la advertising, though they bad intended to spend only $75. but they were obliged to send out 350 copies for review while they had hoped that fifty or sixty"would suffice; moreover, in spite of all their efforts, the ssies rose to less than 8,000 copies lostead of the 16,000 they had' counted upon.

Hence it is clear that there is great danger in denying the claim of a hook which pretends to the title of novel,-But as to what a novel is we are left in some doubt. The learned judge said that so far as be could make out,” a novel' most bave 150,000 words and something about Irve." But that can hardly be an accurate de-.
