THE FATAL ERROR,
It is now stated that the original telegram, whnae error and delay was the cause of the
disaster, should have reported a freshet of
wenty-six feel at Siang-yang, instead of six
feet. When it reached Haokow it still showed head of six feet. The delay was duc, it is said, to a certain functionary being out when the telegram was delivered, so it was put aside scopesed. Following that the gong men did not go out to give the warning when they got their instructions. Thus the story now runs that the telegraph clerk inadvertently wired a six feet fresher instead of twenty-six; then the telegram was not attended to when it came to hand, and finally the gang men dawdled. It is comforting to know that these men the gong men to wit-have been dismissed. The whole is a good sample of the sick way is which things are managed in China,
