Gentlemen-The past balf-year has witness
a steady decline in the price of silver and andden and severe fluctuations in the rates of axchange between China and gold-using coun- tries: it has been, throughout, a period of anxiety to all connected with the East. Ay year ago it was decided to increase our Capital by 50%--this has bow bean accom- plished and the premium on the new issue very properly added to our Reserve Fund, thereby greatly strengthening our position, As regards the result of the half year now under review we must congratulate ourselves on the splendid result, and while it is no doubt something of a disappointment to some of you that your Directorate have not thought well to make any distribution in the nature of a Bonus, for my part, I acquiesce in and agree to their decision as, I am sure, having our interest at heart, you all do, (applause) though I venture to hope that, with continuance of prosperity such as we have experienced recently, they may see fit to return to this most agreeable custom-or better still, an increased dividend. cur (Applause)
Gentlemen,-Good results can only be at- tained by constant, hard, palosjaking work and faithful service such as we are receiving fram our Managers, Agents, and Staff throughout (applause),

The issue of the new shares authorised at the extraordinary meeting of shareholders beld of the 31st May fast has been completed. The *calls have been fully paid up and the capital now appears in the balance sheet as $15,000,000, thus, marking a new era in the history of the Bank. Part of the premium derived from the asua, has been invested in consoli face Talus of 6610,000 and this has permitted us to increase the sterling reserve fund by £500,000: the balance of $1,250,000 has been carried to the silver reserve fund. If you pass the sc counts now before you our sterling reserve fund will stand at £1,500,000 and our silver reserve fund at $13,500,000-a really strong position which I am sure all our supporters will be glad to see, which, cannot fail to it. crease the Bank's usefulness in developing the foreign trade of the East.
