BROMPTON HOSPITAL AUTHORITIES.
SCEPTICAL
An account has been published of a remark able operation performed by "a well-known London surgeon" for what is described as pulmonary tuberculosis." The operation con- slated, according to the newspaper report, of making two incisions, one at the base of the shoulder blada and the other in the arm plt, of removing portions of the ribs, and opening the closed lung cavities of the consumptive, thus allowing them to be drained and local applicae tions made. Hitherto, it has not been con sidered practicable to out into the lung on account of the heavy bleeding; but in this case, it is stated, a new cauterising instrument was used, which prevented any appreciable dow of blood,
Authorities at Brompton Hospital for Con- sumptives, where a representative of the Pall Mall Gazelle nada saquiries, with regard tes the reported new treatment, are somewhat sceptical about the report. Surgery for simple tubercle is unkown at Brompton, and in the absence of details of the case they are inclined to believe that there were other conditions that made the operation necessary, such, perhaps, as abscett or gangrene. In cases where these conditions are found in addition to the tuber culosis, operation is often resorted to, but towards "surgery for cobsumptton" pure and simple, the attitude for the moment, at any rate, is one of extreme doubl.
RUCCESS OF THE OPEN-AIR EXERCIS”,
TREATMENT! -
In the meantime it is gratifying to hear of the continued success of the open-air exercise treatment for consumption at the sanatorium connected with Bromption Hospital at Frimley,
Of the ong hundred and twenty-five patients discharged from the institution is 1920, one hundred and ten are at work to-day at their old occupation. The treatment, which begius, after a mooth's observation a! Brompton, with walk- ing exercise, and is carried through the various atages of digging up weeds, carrying baskets at mould, hoeing, and similar light occupations, to digging broken ground and trenching, occu- pying some four or five months in the pine forests at Frimley, is regarded as the most valuable discovery that has yet been made fur the early stages of consumption and.as offering to the patient, a real basis of hope for per-
manent cure.
