This was the Derby day. After Mr. John- stone's remarkable performance of yesterday, winning six races out of the eleven, he was considered the most likely successful candi- date for the honours of the day. How far anticipations proved correct, will beseen later. The first race on the cards to-day was the Pro- fessional Cup which attracted six ponies to the field. Astral was tipped by "Jockey" in our issue of last night and Mr. G. C. C. Mas ter brought in his pony an easy winner from Kirkmahoe, who made a bold bid to wrest the race from Astral, but unavailingly, It was expected that Mr. G. C. C. Master, on York Rose, would have carried off the Exchange Plate, but disappointment was great when York Rose was beaten within a few hundred yards of the winning post by Mystic.. Six competitors came out for the Derby, on which some heavy betting took place Palm Tree, Kirkwood and Jubilee Rose were the best favourites, but Palm Tree was the most extensively supported. The field got away at the first attempt, Mr. Hayes culting out the way at a slow pace for the first half mile, but going past the straight the rate of travelling was materially increased and the competitors passed the Grand Stand with not much of an advantage one over the other.
