Elict?was issued in- Peking ordering the Board of Revonus and Commerce forthwith to introduce a un.form system of weights and measures throughou!: the Chinese Empire, the standards to be fixed within six months The British Weights and Measures Association, at the request of manu. factures and merchants interested la trade with Chon, prepared a petition on the subjeci for presentation to His Excellency Viscount L the Chinese Minister in London. This with petition was signed by 150 firms trading Chion and representing both the import and export trades It asks that the standarda shell be uniform with or be multiples, and inb multiples without fractions of the English, &, c standards. The petition points out that the ALSO present considerable trade between the two countries is principally based upon Englib standards of weight and measure. The standards, it is declared, are the survival of the fittest for manufacturing and trading purposes; they are of almost universal application in the international trade of the world; their bases originate in the wants of the consumer, and the standards are therefore the most rational; there is no immutable ai un form comlation be between these standards, and the evolving of us

Your issue of Oct. 10 contained the Interest Ing information that the Chinese Governmest proposes to reform. The chaotic weights and measures of that Empire, and i have reason 10 believe that the Chinese authorities are giving serious consideration to the claims of the matric system, It is only to be expected, In view of the their weights and measures have adopted thi system, that China should be persuaded to follow theixamplay but it is also evident that those who are at present concerned in opposing the metric system by all means in their power will de their plmost on this occasion to induce those lo authority in China to disregard the merits of the only scientific and accurate SAGES TO SHOP! Kome. system based upon the British units, 1 dis- miss as incredible the idea that the Chinein' should be asked to adopt what has been rightly termed "our timo-wasting and brain-wearing weights and measures" as they stand. But the anti-metricists do not appear to realise that they are adopting a vary inconsistent attitude. They have frequently stated that our mans. facturers can, and do, quote for all the metric, markets in the metrical terms of those markets.

Mr. Lloyd-George, la apposing the Metric Bill last March, stated that he had been informed on very good authority that "if they had orders for cloth manufactured on a large scale in the milli of Lancashire, they would have, son: quolations in metric figures without any difficulty at all." Why then should these gentleman concera themselves in opposing the addition of China to the already large and im posing list of metric countries ?. Ons statement will certainly be made by our opponents, and [431 believe is now being made by them, which I

bink should be refuted. I refer to the asser tion that the metric system has "broken down- hopelessly in France.” It would hardly seem accessarytocontradict this statement, but many who have not sufficient knowledge of Continen

}

of the French Minister of Commerce, who addressed a letter to this association on the subject last year, but I think that the question may be safely left to the judgment and cam. mon sense of your readers. The Chinese, 1 believe, have already considerable experience in certain parts, of the working of the metric system, and there is no doubt that there is friendly feeling towards it in official circles in Japan. Is does not appear likely that Chinn will easily be pamunded to adopt a system, or modification of system, which has so long. addled our manufacturers and merchants with manecessary complications
