HOG PARVENTION,

REPORT ON SIGNOR MAGGIOSA'S PROPOBAL

The Public Control Committee of the London County Council have received the report of the Director of the Meteorological Office upon the apparatus Invented by Signor Maggiore for the prevention and dispersal of fog, and upon this will submit a recommendation to the Council Krits next meeting.

The report has not yet been made public, but we are enabled to give the substance of it. Dr. Sham slates that the proposal once more raises "the whole question of the possibility of affecting the weather by artificial meats, which, whenever it hs' baen lavestigated by com petent authorities, has beso decided in the mogative, except in the special case of the light ning conductor."

|

The apparatus which Signor Maggiora now offers for removing London fog is, he saya, apa- parently on similar lines to that supplied in Raly for dispersing hailstorm, From the acleatific point of view hail afforda much more specious opportunity for human interference than log. The atmosphere is then in a state of grent commotion preceded by abnormally costable conditions & London fog is inciden tal to conditions of naivial stability, and Bigoor Maggiera's memorandum suggests no physical process which could produce nay effect in accordance with known physical properties of the atmosphere.

It may be ̈ramuked that the weight of a cubic mile of air is about five million tons, and consequently the weight of fog-laden air in the case of a fog a mile thick extending over the district of greater London alone is theco- thousand million tons. liis obviously useless to attempt the motion of so great a mast by mechanical'action.

Dr. Shaw, in conclusion, states that Signor Maggiora's suggested programme may be sum- med up "by saying that the claim in prevent or disperse fog is entirely unsupported by any evidence, the claim to prevent rain is opposed by the more frequent claim of similar process to produce rain in countries which suffer from drought, and the claim to affect hailstorms (which is associated with that regarding thunder and lightning) is not allowed by the scientific experts' of Austria and Italy who have conduct. ed spécial investigations on the subject for their respective Governments."
