12: Nipe years Jago the Admiralty sent H.M.S. Watermfich to survey Esperance Bay and an approach to it. This work was done thorough- ly, but the remalader of the cost, off which the islands fie, has never been surveyed, 10 that only, vessels having to call along the alc most uninhabited mainland vesture into the treacherous waters. This explains why the islands have not only bien lek practically un- „visited, but also quite uninhabited.
Mr. Connolly, a former member of the Leg. šslative Assembly, of Western Australia, mida an unsuccessful attempt to utilise the island. He secured a lease from the Government, and embarked in agriculture. He had three small sailing craft, each below go tous, with which he and his employeet vialled the islands, and in which the produce was to be conveyed to market. But in a very short time all-three vessels were wrecked and some livet lost. Relics of other boats are strewn about the coast

to coloolse the archipelago. Mr. Connolly found the soll very rich, and cleared a conq sidembla portion of one of the islands. De sowed a crop, but gave up the experiment befőre gathering it.
With the increasing anxiety about defence matters in Australia, it is felt that "something should be done, to ensure more than nominal possession of the archipelago. An enemy preased for a coaling station could fare worse zban securing one of these islands, with n'shel.. make a temporary home without being detect ered harbour. An unlevited guest could thus
ed for some moniku, and an enemy quartered- there would be just 200 miles from Kalgoorlie, The present need is a completa survey of the archipelago and the neighbouring coast, and it is proposed' that the Australian Govern ment should approach the Admiralty with that object.
SHIPBUILDING AND SUBSIDIES.
THE UNITED STATES POST OFFICE VIEW,
Naw York, December 1. ⠀ Mr. G. B. Hunter, of the Tyneside firm that built the Mauretania, listened to many compli- manis passed upon the Cunard's Mary* and "Lucy" at the dinner of the Society of Naval Architects and Engineers at Dalmonico's after his arrival with the ship.... -
"l'any one must rule the wAYDI, WO ATD glad to see that it in Britannia," said Mr. Francis T, Bowles, the former Chief Construct or of the United States Navy, who 'presided. The success of the giant turbiners as rapii mail carriers and their adaptability an war cruisers were frankly acknowledged by the representatives of the Post Office Dev partment and the Navy present at the ban- quet. Several Indications strengthen the conviction that these ships' will be' gând as in effective example for urging upon Congress a Government policy of subsidies. The ship subsidy bill, which was talked out by flibus tering in the last Congress, is to be reintro daced, its chief opponent having been defeated werking re-election mainly because of this
