horsa might do. But once the novelty waars off the sentimentality of our cogitations die appears, leaving behind it merely the prosale |fact that the rikisha is an eminently useful" in " stitution and an almost indispensable vehicle..

Some years ago, I remember meeting in Hongkong a man who had just come out from Home to superintend one section of large ep-

ineering undertaking. He was a man of a fall": habit-weighing sixteen or seventeen stone. With great vehemence he expressed to me cl his indignation and disgust"at the cruelty of Europeans in employing their fellow humans as baulage animals or chair bearers, (thereby, he said, transforming the latter into more slaves to others affluence) instead of using the legs that Providence had' given them, Such platitudes were not unfamiliar to me. Just for the sake of drawing him on, I put forward 'the argument that the tksha coolle was no more s. slave to; wealth than was the dock labourer lumping silk bales on the London wharven or tea chests in Glasgow and Liverpool-both of which commodities undoubtedly coms within the category of luxuries as much as do the hill' chair and the riksha. But there was no shifting this Yorkshireman's fixed conviction: : Ho! he would never lower himself in his own estima- tion and transgress the laws of humanity by riding in a rikisha or going up the hill in a -chair; he would use his legs. Well, it hardly re- quires to be said that Hongkong is not suited to the me of gharries, of which only a few ply.. on the main strest, nor do the low and upper | level tramways serve the entire city ; 'and in summer time the heat-ant to, mention tha rain in the porthern city is far more unbear øble than that which we ever experience in Singapore. It was in the height of summer.

Were a lady member, of the S.P.C,Ay to witness some of the daily sights in our markets; she would probably send a tirade to the "British Weekly" that would result is an indignation meeting in Excior Hail with subsequent suppressive Parliamentary measures. Une of the worst examples of cruelty is to be seen in the method of landing ducks and fowls from the Java basis. The fowls are tied up by the legs in bunches of halla dozen or so,and are slang sshare with much less delicacy of handling than would be accorded to a bunch of Spanish onions or horse radishes, When thrown on to the stones, each bunch lands in a fantastic beap in which beads, logu. Broken wings are frequent, Then how often does one see on, the streets fowls carried by the wings best backward or with head dangling downward j overcrowded bird crates, and such-like?
