The scene at this grounds way, indeed, a festive one when the match started: At dif ferent points of the ground huge matsheds and tents were erected, and around these a good supply of flags and bunting was sported.
The gathering at the commencement of the maich was comparatively small, but during the progress of the game a considerable number crowded the sheds nad the different points of

d, needless to say, play was watched with great interest and considerable enthusiasm was displayed on the individual performance of the cricketers. During the earlier pan of the morning the weather was dull and at times threatening, the fun being obscured behind some dark clouds which rolled overhead. A The day wore on the light did not improve, and although the absence of the sun's rays was welcomed by the crowd, the light was defective In consequence. There was some slight drizzie during the tiffio adjournment, but not suffi| ciest to sensibly affect the goodilian of the phch. The weather was dull and overcan throughout the rout of the day. Lanning was carefully blocking the bowling and had settled down to steady stonewalling without taking any risks, while Edwards was playing a free; open game. Edwards drove Carruthers to square leg för a douce, and Maife then took up, the bowling, but Lanning blocked with heart-breaking per- sistency, undanother maiden over was recorded. Carruthers now. gave way to McEuen at the western and, and Edwardi skied his second ball to the fence and added a single off the the ovar. Edwards slipped, at great risk, a boundary of Main and followed it up Inst ball of th by lifting the ball clean out of the ground for 6, his vigorous hit being rewarded by spontaneous applause. Edwards was now playing all round the wicks and taking liberties with the bowling, which was in a rect contrast to Lancing's cautious tactics, who, however, prettily cut McEuen past point for two and the over finished without further score. Edwards altered his position by a drive for one and the field again changed over. Edwards contributed lashing two and the second century was recorded on the board, amidst prolonged applause, and he followed this with an additional one, then three, then fitted the next ball for six. Walker was next man in, and brought a light drizzle with him. He opened his score with a four. to the fence off Makin. Sharpe early. bowled Anderson, who appeared to have a feline lease of life. Piny after this continued slow, the score-board reading 70.
Walker broke the monotony by driving Sharpe for two fours and two in quick succes afbo, and the Band struck up a lively tune as though in appreciation. Twice Anderson cut Makin to slips, and the third time succeeded in getting the ball to the boundary. : A drive by Walker off Sharpe produced only a single. A smart bit of fielding and return by Dick
Hancock saved gun, but Anderson, got to. be denied, notched another before the over closed,
