TWENTYONE DAYS IN ALPINE CAFK.

Geneva, Sept. 2,

Mme.. Emelia Schopfer, aged 37, a pative of Berne, left her hotel alone on August ist in the best of health and spirits on a beautiful morning. Twenty-one days later she was car ried, wizened, boat, greyhaired, a physical and mental wreck, to a hospital here. Ninety-nine përsons of a hundred would have succumbed under the horrors and torture of starvation which she suffered, but she may recover. She has regained her senses.

This is the story told by Mme. Schopfer: "On, the morning of August 1st÷I walked along the bank of the River, Dala, inten- ing to return to the hotel to lunch. The beautiful weather and the scenery, how- ever, seemed to fascinate me. I pedetrated further up the gorge of the Dala" and lost my way. I was horrified to find that owing to the steep, slip. pery stone sides I was unable to climb out, 1 houted all that day and night for help till my voice was so hoarse that I was unable to shout. I ate my last two pieces of chocolate and con. tinually drank fie water which trickled through the racks: Another day came and weit, and. yet another. I forget how many, because I must have been delirious.

The village church, the top of the steeple of which I could see from myjiving tomb, seemed he only hope. I prayed daily to the steeple's cross for deliverance. On Stodays, especially, T suffered terrible mental torture when I heard the bells pealing and the choir singing prac
