Renewed efforts were made during the morn;
ing to bring off the shipwrecked men. The coastguard boat put out in vain, and one man was swept overboard. He was saved with the greatest difficulty.
NO ROCKET APparatus. Capt. Hales, the divisional officer of coast. guards, who was in command of the rescuers, bad to confess reluctantly that he could do nothing with his smail boat and that, not being. in possession of a rocket apparatus, he was practically, powerless.
The attention of the huge crowd on the shore and różka was attracted by a commotion on the wreck, and before long it was vean that tho Franch crew were constructing a raft. "At noon it was launched, but was instantly sucked under the ship.
Fortunately there were ropes attached to it, and it was drawn on board again. The second launch was more successful. Everyone, on shore, a quarter of a mile away, was eagerly watching the thrilling scene, and a cheer went up when it was seen that two men were'stand. ing on the raft,
