A DEADLOCK.

It has been estimated that the construction of the Mukden-Antong line, projected by the South Manchuria Railway Company, will cost

15,000,000. It has also been found that the line, if built, is not likely to bring ju very much profit, freight and passengers alike being "attracted by the Chinese ling outside the "barrier." South Manchuria Company has con- Sequently found it, advisable to abandon the projected scheme for building this line, and proposes to construct a new line chwang), connecting it with the Seoul Wija from Antong to Tashichao (near Naw

fide in Koron, and also with the Chinese Lu- Han Railway. Investigations havà been made. accordingly, and it has been found that the Construction of the line. from Antong to Tashi- ` chan will cost Y25,000,000 less than the pro- [941 | pored Mukden Antong line. In addition to this adv hinge, the new line would facilitate communication much more than the Mukden. Antony branch. Owing to an objection made by the Army, authorities to the proposed alter -ntion of the scheme, a deadlock has resulted, and the question remains unsettled.--Japan Chronicla,

GANB OF THR. BAST ÎNDIAN.

In America, in China, and in 'most countries of the world, with the exception of India, the clothing used is woven in wholesale lengths, and the tailor does the rest. In India the cloth is woven into the required shapes and sizes, and but rarely cut to fie the body, Dhooties, aarries and chadars," the three great Indian cloths, are used as they are woven, and are not touched by needle or scissors. The Moham medans usually wear. garments requiring the use of “a „tailor, “but the great talk of the indon population, either from ma-

lives of economy or from aversion to depart from established custom, prefer simpla loom. made garments, and to many orthodox Hin-- doos made-up clothes are an abomination. The majority of the population, therefore, still wear the dhootie and the sarrie, though the upper classes ars day by day gradually assimi». lating the customs of the Mohammedan and European races, and around the farge citien this is very noticeable. - An iaiiance of thik is" the fact that for a certain class the costume la. ludian to the waist, and European upward; this bare legs and a loin cloth, finished off with a European coat.

In India there is more variety and intermix. ture of styles than is to be found anywhere else on earth, and to a stranger it seems that the native wears just as little or just as much clash- ing. as he chooses, and of whatever style or pattern that suits his individual fancy. As a matter of fact, however, custom, which is stron- ger in India than in China even, has set certain styles and palteros certain classes and sects, and the so are as a rule ripidly adhered to. One whits been long in India can tell from a native's clothing and style of dress’his religion, the section from whence he haili, "and other chracteristics..

The Hindoe usually wears the turban, the Mohammedan the fex. In Bombaythe Marathas seldom wear printed cottons, the Gujarat almipit invariably do so. In Bengal the natives. prefer a dhootie with a narrow red or black border. In the central provinces they prefer fancy coloured stripe, etc. Almost every race and caste has its favourite colour and" style ̈of clothing. Moslem ceremonial law forbids the die of pure silk by man, except in war, or used as narrow-borders, so mixed silk and cotton. 'fabrics pro largely worn by the better classes, ' especially in the Mohammedan.rection of the country, which in the northwest.

There are three cloths that are typical of the inhabitants of India and of lodia alone, and have been their distinctive garments for thou sands of years, or at least from times anterior to their contact with the first Epropean adven. turers. These typical cloths are dhootics, sar

ries and chadars, which with the pagris or tur ban are all toom-made garments only. To these might be added the "choli,”, which is the little bodice now' largely worn by Hindoo women below the partjë ; thé,“ susi,” which is the striped cloths used in the Trousers worn by Mohammedan women i and the fard" or "ray," a large shoulder sheet, often quilted. The "palanposh," similar to the rati, and also often quilted, used as bed cover; the floor cloth, or “satranjis," and the rug or darl," sums up the list of the chief textile articles "öf-native dress' and household use The medium fion"dhootles, skrries zud chadars are all imparted, but there is a very large native manufacture of the coarser grades, and also of the finest grades, the band-loomu in the latter case running on imported yarn- Consular Report. ·
